OpenSEO: Free Keyword Research and Rank Tracking for Any Small Business

Jesse Burcsik·August 31, 2026·2 min read

Any small business with a website should know how they rank on Google. Most have no idea, because the tools that answer that question start at $99 a month.

What's happening

An independent developer built OpenSEO, a free, open-source alternative to SEMrush and Ahrefs. It covers the same core ground: keyword research, rank tracking, competitor analysis, backlink checks, and full site audits. You can self-host it with Docker at no charge, or use the hosted version at openseo.so for $10 a month.

The part that changes the math is the data layer. Instead of a flat monthly subscription, OpenSEO uses the DataForSEO API on a pay-per-query basis. A small business that checks rankings weekly and does keyword research a few times a month might spend a few dollars a month on API costs. Not triple digits. You look up what you need, and you pay only for that.

The project is MIT licensed and actively maintained. August alone brought Google Analytics integration, shared project context, and new Local SEO tools. It also has native MCP support, so you can connect it to an AI assistant and ask SEO questions in plain language without logging into any dashboard.

Try this this week

  • Head to openseo.so. If you're comfortable with Docker, self-host for free. Otherwise, the $10/month hosted version gets you running in a few minutes.
  • Sign up for a DataForSEO account and grab your API key. There's no monthly minimum: you pay per query, nothing when you're not using it.
  • Run keyword research for your core service and city ("florist Ottawa," "bookkeeper Hamilton," whatever fits your business).
  • Check your rank for three terms you think you're showing up for. The results are often surprising.
  • Pull one competitor report to see what a nearby business ranks for that you don't. Start there and work backward.

The bigger picture

For years, real SEO research has been gated by cost. If you couldn't afford the subscription, you were guessing. OpenSEO is a good example of the shift that keeps happening in open-source tooling: capabilities that used to require an enterprise budget now fit in a side-project price range. For a small business or community org that has been flying blind on search, this is the kind of working tool worth spending an afternoon on.
