Free, Local Dictation for Your Mac: No Subscription Required

·October 12, 2026·2 min read

Wispr Flow charges $144 a year to let you talk instead of type. A new open-source project just made that bill optional.

What's happening

BetterWispr landed on the Hacker News front page yesterday with 173 upvotes and a lot of excited comments from people who had been paying for Wispr Flow. The app does one thing: hold a keyboard shortcut (Option + Space by default), speak, let go, and your words appear in whatever app is active. Email, browser, notes app, invoice software. Whatever you have open.

The key difference from the paid version: it runs entirely on your Mac. No cloud, no account, no API key. BetterWispr uses on-device models: Apple's built-in speech engine, Whisper, or Parakeet. You pick the one that works best for your voice and hardware. The project is licensed under Apache 2.0, costs nothing, and has no usage cap.

It requires macOS 14 or later, and works best on Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Intel Macs work, but the heavier Whisper models may be slower. Apple Speech is fast on anything.

Try this this week

  • Download the latest release from the BetterWispr releases page and open the .dmg file.
  • Give it microphone permission when macOS asks.
  • Start with the Apple Speech model. It is fast, needs no download, and is already on your Mac.
  • Test it in your email client. Hold Option + Space, say a short reply out loud, let go. See if it saves you time.
  • Turn on "Cleanup: Light" in settings. It removes filler words like "um" and false starts automatically.
  • If you want better accuracy for longer passages, try switching to Whisper Tiny or Parakeet.

The bigger picture

This is the pattern worth watching: tools you used to rent by the year now have free, local, open-source versions that run on hardware you already own. No vendor lock-in, no data leaving your office, no subscription creep. If you are running a small shop or a nonprofit on a tight budget, that adds up fast. The smallest working thing, running on your own terms.
